A Family Tradition

Famous for our twin-flavoured ice cream cones, Root Beer milkshakes, and home-style burgers, Merla Mae has been a favourite of baby boomers since the 1950’s. Merla Mae was founded in 1951 by Wendell Cathers as the first licensed drive-in in Thunder Bay, ON, Canada. Since then, the ice cream stand on Memorial Ave. has instilled a great sense of tradition in many Thunder Bay families. Mothers and fathers who have been enjoying Merla Mae’s delicious soft-serve treats since its inception have passed the tradition onto their children and even their grandchildren.
